Vaginal Hygiene Concerns

Is there a way to safely remove the hair?

There are some things you can do to reduce your risk of an injury or infection during and after grooming your pubes.

  • Wash yourself beforehand.

  • Disinfect your razor blade or scissors and change blades often.

  • Use a handheld mirror.

  • Proceed in the direction of your hair growth.

  • Moisturize after.

  • Avoid tight clothes for a few days after.

  • Exfoliate regularly.

So how should you clean “down there”?

Warm soapy water should be used to gently cleanse the areas where hair naturally would grow. Only unscented products should be used, and they should only be used on the external genitalia. The internal genital tract really does not require any cleansing at all.

What to do when the skin is sensitive/irritated.

Home remedies for rashes, skin conditions, and irritation due to hormonal changes include:

  • using moisturizer

  • taking OTC antihistamines

  • using anti-itch creams or ointments

  • trying oatmeal baths

  • applying cold compresses to numb pain

  • using lubrication if irritation occurs during sex

In some cases, a person may be able to prevent irritation. For example, if a person shaves, using a sharp razor or leaving some hair in the area can help prevent folliculitis.

How to prevent yeast/bacterial infection.

If you're prone to vaginal infections, consider the following tips to help keep the environment in your vagina balanced:

  • Wear underwear with a cotton crotch

  • Avoid tight pantyhose, leggings, or jeans

  • Stay away from vaginal douches

  • Don't use scented feminine products or toilet paper

  • Make sure you change tampons, liners, and pads frequently

  • Change out of wet clothes as soon as possible

  • Always wipe from front to back

Rashes, sores, blisters, or lumps in the vaginal or vulvar area

Many conditions can cause a rash, sore, blister, or lump in your vaginal area ( vulva ). One of the most common causes of a rash is genital skin irritation that may occur when soap is not rinsed off the skin or when tight-fitting or wet clothes rub against the skin. A sore, blister, or lump in your vaginal area may require a visit to your doctor.
